A pilot usability test conducted in early February showed participants did not understand all the OWL resources and were sometimes confused while using the OWL. Based on the results of the pilot test, we conducted two generations G1 and G2 of formal usability tests between late February and early July The results of the tests indicate the following: In addition to the results above, we also encountered two unexpected, but very important, findings: We interpret this data as a sign of success for the new OWL.
Based on test data, we recommend: Move the navigation bar from the right side to the left side of the OWL 3. Add a search function 4. Continue testing to measure usability and to generate new ideas for design and content.
Online Writing Lab programmers have integrated some of these changes, and overall, we believe the redesign is a success. We believe that the information presented in this report, as well as other open-source venues connected with this project, can positively impact usability and Writing Lab studies and can serve as a guide to inform multidisciplinary research and cooperation. Date — 06 — Who can use it? It was developed by the Learning Center primarily for D'Youville College students who want to become better writers by learning and applying the rules of grammar and punctuation.
However, in the spirit of St. Marguerite D'Youville, who always gave generously of her time and resources, the College has chosen to share its Online Writing Lab with anyone who finds it useful. It is set up so you or your students can read the instructional presentations on any area of writing and independently complete the exercises online. So, no matter who you are or what your writing problem is, you can find individual help right here.
How exactly can it help me? Let's say you attend a high school or a college other than D'Youville, and your instructor has told you that you need help with fragments. Instead of hiring a private tutor, you can click on the index and then click on "fragments," and you can read the brief instructional presentations on fragments which include examples of what a fragment is. Then you can practice identifying fragments, distinguishing fragments from complete sentences, and changing fragments to complete sentences by clicking on Exercise 1 or 2.
After completing each exercise, you can check your answers correct answers are the buttons that light up in green. By the time you are finished, you will have learned what a fragment is and how to correct one, and then you can apply that knowledge to your own writing assignments.
What is the best way to use the Online Writing Lab? First, find the area in which you need help. Then click on that area and just follow the directions. It's as simple as that.
